We are going to a wedding today! This is a special wedding. You come as you are. There is no need to adorn yourself with pretty clothes, make-up and bouffant hair. This wedding is a ceremony where you come dirty, disheveled, messed up, insecure, scared, broken YET you leave clean, content, secure and whole. You see, Jesus transforms you into His child. And may I say, you are breath-taking! Beautiful is an understatement. Let’s get this party started!
Today’s lesson is John 2:1-12. Read the story of the wedding at Cana. Before we dive into what God wants us to learn, I would like you to pay attention to a few things that will help when you study from now on. Pay attention to Jesus’ words. What He is saying to people back in His time has not changed. They are for you and me today. Also, pay attention to how people followed Jesus. What were their attitudes and demeanor towards what He said to them. What kind of hearts and minds did people who chose to follow Him have? How about those who did not want to follow? Where do you see yourself? Keeping these questions in the forefront of your mind will help you to hear from the Holy Spirit.
Last week we studied what Jesus’ first followers looked like. The wedding takes place the very next day. After Jesus summoned Andrew, Peter, Philip and Nathanael to follow Him, they were all invited to a wedding celebration. Jesus’ mother and brothers were also attending. These verses mark the very first miracle Jesus performs which reveals His glory. There are thirty-five recorded miracles.
During the festivities, the wine runs out so Mary goes to her first-born and tells him about it. We see how Jesus was very matter-of-fact with her, “Dear woman, that’s not our problem. My time has not yet come.”
INSIGHT: One thing that you will learn when walking with Jesus is that His timing is perfect and impeccable! Look for Him in your day. He is everywhere! I am amazed at how He continues to woo me and wow me with how He shows up! We all wait. Waiting to hear from God. He always answers in His correct time. Never before. I don’t know about you, but this causes great irritation within me!
INSIGHT: Jesus’ mother was a widow at this time. Joseph had passed on. Scripture is quiet with when and how he died. We do know that Joseph taught Jesus his carpenter’s trade and that Mary and Joseph had many other children.
Mary relied on her eldest son. Duh, I would too! You could say Jesus was her different egg. He was conceived by the Holy Spirit and never sinned; quite unlike his sibling and us. Can you say Mama’s favorite!?! She quietly knows who her son is yet doesn’t fully understand all of the plans that God has Him. Even in her lacking, Mary listens and trusts. She tells the servants to do whatever Jesus says.
QUESTION: Where do you lack in understanding? Are there things happening in your life that causes doubt, anger, frustrations in wondering what God is doing? Do you feel like God is dangling a carrot in front of you? And you just can’t seem to reach it?
I am going through such a time over the summer and into this fall. You could say my life feels like an earthquake hit. Everything has been shaken up and changed. And I do not do well with change. I suffer from situational anxiety. I am having to buckle down with my Lord and His word as I find my way in a new season. Starting this blog/website is a factor. Once I get this up and running, I will be publishing a book. All of this is new to me! I do not know what I am doing. God has been leading me step-by-step. Soon, I will be offering a “newsletter”. This means I have to now learn Mailchimp. Have patience and pray as I learn new things. I am walking on the water with Christ. Empty-nesting, marriage and developing food sensitivities are more factors that I am having to navigate in and like Mary, trust and listen to Christ. I can’t give into listening to my reasoning and feelings.
Let’s continue with the story. Nearby were six stone jars that were used for Jewish ceremonial washing. They each could hold 20-30 gallons. Jesus told the servants to fill the jars with water. After they were filled, He told the servants to dip some out and take it to the master of ceremonies. The servants followed His instructions.
INSIGHT: The washing jars were used for people to clean themselves. They are considered dirty and would be unthinkable to drink from.
QUESTION: Even when you aren’t understanding, how willing are you to follow Jesus and do what He instructs? Or do you trust yourself? If you are the latter, how is it going?
When the master of ceremonies tasted the water that was now wine, he called the bridegroom over. The master tells the bridegroom, “A host always serves the best wine first. Then, when everyone has had a lot to drink, he brings out the less expensive wine. But you have kept the best until now!”
Jesus takes what the world considers dirty, unthinkable to use and disgusting and transforms it something beautiful and useable! Like Mary and the disciples, we only need to believe, trust and obey the Lover of our souls. His name is Jesus Christ! He takes our dirty and sinful natures and changes us into something new and clean! We become His bride!
QUESTION: This event helped the disciples to believe Jesus. They were being transformed as they spent time with Him. Does it scare you or excite you what could happen if you let Jesus lead your life? What stops you?
QUESTION: What needs to happen in your faith where God takes you from believing in Jesus to believing Jesus? Note, one small word makes a world of difference.
There are no words to adequately express the love that God has for us. It is beyond our comprehension. We do not deserve the love that He is offering. Because we are born into a sinful world its dirtiness is within us. This makes us unfit for His kingdom. But because God loves us, He sent Jesus to live like you and me and experience life in human form. Here is where His love is the epitome of all loves, Jesus took upon Himself all the sin and dirtiness of this world. He broke the barrier and became the bridge for man to return to God by resurrecting from the dead! This ONE EVENT changed everything! This is why Jesus is the King of Kings, Lord of Lords.
This act of love transforms every sinful person into His bride, His child, His forever love! All He asks is to believe, trust and obey. He will lead us home.
Never stop partying! “I will rescue you.” “I will send out an army to find you.” Listen to Lauren Daigle and her song(s). “His love is the reason to keep on believing.” Listen to Reason by Unspoken. “Who the Son sets free, oh is free indeed. I am a child of God. Yes I am.” Listen to Who You Say I am – A Child of God by Hillsong Worship. Keep your hearts alive to our amazing God!
