How well do you see? Let me ask a more concise question, how well do you see spiritually? For those who have received Jesus Christ as their Lord and Savior and are walking by the Holy Spirit in obedience, God grants spiritual eyes that see beyond their physical eyesight. The Holy Spirit dwells within you teaching, guiding, and instructing where to go and what to do each day.
John 14:26 ESV, “But the Helper, the Holy Spirit, whom the Father will send in My name, He will teach you all things and bring to your remembrance all that I have said to you.”
Every believer has within them the presence of God. Therefore, every believer can see and hear beyond their five senses that are bound by time and space. God literally walks with you and talks with you 24/7. If only you and I would remember this.
We tend to let things block our view of His presence.
The Israelites in the Old Testament kept blocking their view of God, and we, today, are just like them. Here’s one instance, found in Numbers 21:4-9, that reveals how the Israelites blocked their view. As we all know, Moses led the Israelites out of Egypt and was bringing them to the land God promised them.
On their journey they received victory from the Canaanites due to their prayer to God. “If you will hand these people over to us, we will completely destroy all their towns.”21:2 God heard their prayer. So, the Israelites followed through and destroyed all enemy territory. They continued to move forward to what God promised them, but the journey was long. And what happens when the journey becomes boring, tiring, frustrating?
They grew impatient. They complained. Who did they speak against, see verse 5? And just like that, their view was blocked. How easy it is to lose sight of the hope that you have in God and His presence in you. How easy it is to become unsatisfied with God and His provision. Don’t we want what we want and have it our way and in our timeframe?
And yet, God provides. God continues to show love, grace, and mercy. He desires no one to perish, see 2 Peter 3:9. From that verse, what does God want from every believer? Amidst His provision, God also sent correction. He sent the Israelites snakes. This caused them to have a wake up call that they sinned. What did they confess, see verse 7? Some died while others were saved by being obedient.
What journey (or season of life) are you in that seems to be dragging on? The waiting has become a hardship? How do you become impatient? What do you complain about? Oh, how we all struggle with blocking the view of God. Thankfully, He offers hope to hang on. He never stops working on the behalf of those who follow His Son.
Check out Deuteronomy 31:14-29 and learn how the believers abandoned God. Moses gives a warning that is fitting for us today. God is good at bringing you into a fruitful land where you can become prosperous. You can eat what you want and become fat even, see verse 20a. “But they will begin to worship other gods. They will despise Me and break My covenant.”20b And their view became blocked. When life is too good in the physical realm, spiritual things take a back burner. You may not totally let go of God and His ways, but you enjoy your earthly life more; thus you become a lukewarm Christian.
What does God say to those who abandon Him and His ways? They commit evil, see verse 18 and 29, and you become utterly corrupt. God is a holy God and He does not mingle with evil. As a child of God, you must live a life that is holy to God.
You read throughout the pages of the Bible how God wants His children to respond to Him. One must pray to God and talk honestly with Him. Confession and repentance will be present in a heart that desires to please God, then obedience to what the Holy Spirit tells you. Walking in this manner keeps your view of God clear. Your sight will be focused on the right thing, God Himself.
